First-to-Market Smart Sleep Brand Launch

JAB Distributors dba Protect-A-Bed | VP of Marketing | 2016 - 2018

Challenge

REM-Fit, an emerging athletic lifestyle brand, had developed an innovative smart pillow—first to market with sleep tracking technology and health benefit positioning. However, the revolutionary product struggled to find its audience. The pillow was too heavy, too expensive, and consumers didn't understand how it integrated with their existing smart home ecosystems. The company needed to position REM-Fit as a premium healthy lifestyle brand while simultaneously refining the product based on real consumer insights. The biggest obstacle: launching a completely new brand category through retail partners whose sales staff had no training on smart sleep technology and didn't work directly for REM-Fit.

Strategy

Developed comprehensive brand launch strategy combining consumer-driven product development, innovative retail experience design, and omnichannel marketing execution.

Product Development: Led consumer testing with product development team to identify critical features including IFTTT compatibility for IoT ecosystem integration. Discovered through testing that smart pillow was too heavy and expensive, informing product re-engineering roadmap.

Retail Innovation: Partnered with Mattress Firm, the nation's largest mattress retailer, to launch store-within-a-store concept. Designed athletic lifestyle brand environment featuring exposed brick, vibrant packaging, and immersive healthy sleep program positioning. Created digital kiosk with facial measurement technology that asked personal preference questions and provided personalized bedding recommendations—enabling customers to shop without salesperson assistance.

Sales Enablement: Developed extensive education program for third-party Mattress Firm sales staff. Launched in-store training videos, salesperson rewards program with loyalty points for product knowledge completion, and incentive structure to drive sales of products they didn't directly represent.

Integrated Marketing: Executed $600K national advertising campaign spanning cable TV commercials, billboards, geofencing to track retail store sales attribution, and text marketing campaigns. Launched direct-to-consumer e-commerce operations with integrated digital marketing strategy connecting national advertising to online sales.
